People in Florence

Now that the sun has come out in Scotland, it feels like the right time to look back at our trip to Italy last year and do some more blog posts.  We spent a few days in that beautiful city Florence and a post on the art and architecture will follow.  But I thought I’d start with the people – we like street photography and Florence is full of people – you can’t move without tripping over tourists doing selfies or snapping each other with tablets.  However, we tried to focus on the people who live and work in Florence. for instance, this doorman outside a posh hotel.

Or stopping to answer that vital text.

Or pedestrians taking that important call.

Or just sitting reading a book.

People live their lives despite the bustle of the visitors all around them.

And even manage to find quiet routes away from the hurly burly.

Having said all that, a post on people in Florence can’t ignore the tourists – and it’s hard to photography some of the main sights without tourists in shot.  The replica of Michelangelo’s David outside the  Palazzo Vecchio is impossible to photograph without visitors passing by so I embraced them as part of the shot.

And you cannot avoid the crowds outside the Uffiizi if you want to visit its treasures.

Florence is a beautiful city and we were so fortunate to have the chance to visit – and we look forward to sharing more photos in future posts.

Around The City – Oslo

We spent 3 days in an incredibly hot Oslo recently.  As you can see from this shot, the sun was strong and created good shadows.

Both of us were captivated by the Royal Opera House opened in 2008.  It has lots of sloping areas for sun-worshipers to spread themselves across and is of course, ideal for urban snappers.

The lines and angles drew us both and we took many, many shots.

We took full advantage of the glass which provided some interesting reflections.

In An Oslo Garden

This is a bit of a change from our normal work.  We were staying with Paul’s cousin Gro who has a beautiful garden in Oslo – and the sun shone the whole time.  So, we had an excellent opportunity to experiment with some macro  photography.  Oh, and we have included some colour…

Close-up of a member of the onion family – allium.

I think this is actually a weed but I loved the structure and the colour.

Another set from the Galapagos Archipelago offshore Ecuador, South America. As with the previous post on the Giant Tortoises, there’s something prehistoric about the Marine Iguanas too. As there are often Sally Lightfoot Crabs  – Latin name Graspus Graspus , yes, really – nearby to the Iguanas, I’ve included them too.

A selection of Galapagos Giant Tortoise photos taken in the ‘Highlands’ of Santa Cruz Island, in the Galapagos Archipelago offshore Ecuador, South America. Something prehistoric about these ancient looking creatures and, without anthropomorphising too much, full of character.

We stayed at the excellent Finch Bay Eco-Hotel and had a variety of fantastic, well-organised trips to see the unusual wildlife and landscape. We had good guides, in particular Valentine, who was easy-going, yet knowledgeable and authoritative, plus a friendly team in the hotel led by yer man Carlos.
