As usual, we’ve been out and about dodging in and around the crowds and rain showers to bring you a flavour of the #EdFringe goings on, following on from Pauls post on the Fourth Monkey Theatre Company actors.

There are lots of characters out there, from locals to visitors to those in one of the myriad shows on at the moment. So far we’ve managed to avoid running into anyone, although brake lights on some of our tourists friends would help avoid potential trouble.

A storming gig on Friday night at Studio 24 in Edinburgh. Headliners were Bombskare, supported by Johnny Cage and The Voodoogroove. Sadly, we missed the first band on, but were nonetheless treated to a fine mix of rock’n’roll’ska from the two we did see. Both bands were in the ‘Britain’s Best part Time Band‘ competition, which was won by Bombskare. I can see why, the whole place was jumping about and having fun. I got a few shots, but Lynn was too busy dancing.

The Blues Botherers

Some pictures from the Blues’n’Trouble 30th (give or take a couple of years) anniversary  gig, preceded by a snap of an early incarnation of B’n’T that was our wedding band in February 1983. The gig at The Queen’s Hall was kicked off by Safehouse and culminated in a reunion of various B’n’T people from over the years.

So, our wedding band. Yes, really. Callum (Scars drummer), Kruntsch(?), Willie Pettigrew, John Bruce, the late and very great Jimmy Brown and Lesley, if I remember right? They played  a country blues waltz for us to dance to, then it all kicked off.

A quick word for Jimmy Brown – one of the best gravelly blues voices I’ve heard, a really nice guy. A highlight for me was the band playing, with him singing Maggie’s Farm with both feeling (it was the eighties) and a smile on his face.

Bear in mind that this is a happy snap on a basic camera from the early eighties – you are lucky it’s in colour and vaguely in focus.

So, on to Safehouse. In the picture below it is three hairy blokes and drum’n’bass, but they are more than just a rythmn’n’hair band – go see ’em for some fantastic guitar stuff from Mr John Bruce and don’t miss Mr Ali Petrie’s organ. They are kept in line by the drums of Mr Sean Scott and the bass / chief of proceedings Mr Andrew Stirling and fronted by the man with the hairy voice, Mr Chris Peebles. They play regularly in Whistlebinkies in Edinburgh plus elsewhere and do an amazing Allman Brothers inspired set, together with blues and more.

And finally, the Blues’n’Trouble all-star revival combination monster that grew limbs and ended the night. There’s ex-BnT-ers Mike Park on the right, who plays like Peter Green I think, Sean Scott on the drums and Telecaster Dave, Mr Lively-having-a-good-time and in a grinning competition with John Bruce. They joined current band members Tim Elliott (vocals – and co-founder of Blues’n’Trouble with John Bruce), Angus Rose (keyboards/guitar) and Rod Kennard (bass).

Victorian Trout Conspiracy

My mate’s daughter is in this band – liking the name, but not managed to see them yet. Wandered by The Bailie last night just after they had finished (unfortunately). Next time perhaps.
